As part of the national celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Glorious Green March and Independence Day, the city of Laâyoune hosted a major cultural event, further enriching its rich artistic heritage. The Mohammed VI Grand Media Library, under the authority of the Laâyoune Municipal Council, organized its first art exhibition dedicated to classical and contemporary Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation. The exhibition was inaugurated on Saturday, November 22, 2025, starting at 10:00 a.m.

Official Inauguration and High-Level Attendance
The opening ceremony took on a remarkable official and cultural character, marked by the presence of Mr. Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid, President of the Laâyoune Municipal Council, alongside the Secretary-General of the Laâyoune Province and the Wali of Security, Mr. Hassan Abou Dahab, as well as the Vice Presidents of the Municipal Council.
The event also brought together artists and academic experts specializing in classical and contemporary Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation, alongside media professionals, reflecting the importance the city places on promoting this artistic heritage.

Artistic Panorama of 43 Moroccan Works
The exhibition showcased an impressive artistic collection, featuring 43 works spanning classical and contemporary Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation. These creations, by a select group of Moroccan artists, demonstrate exceptional mastery and creativity in the art of the letter.
It is worth highlighting that contemporary visual artist and calligrapher Hachem Amzil participated in this exhibition by presenting one of his contemporary calligraphy works, while also overseeing the coordination of the exhibition, leaving a notable mark on its enrichment and organization.

Scientific Symposium Celebrating Moroccan Calligraphy
The inauguration program included a specialized scientific symposium entitled:
"Moroccan Calligraphy and Manuscript Ornamentation: Between History and Development Prospects."
The symposium brought together a panel of academics and experts in this artistic and heritage field, namely:
Dr. Mohamed El Bandouri
Dr. Hassan Laghdach
Dr. Amal Abbassi
Mr. Mohamed Amzil
The presentations led to a rich and in-depth discussion on the history of Moroccan calligraphy, its evolution, and ways to promote this ancestral national cultural heritage within the framework of contemporary development, with the aim of enhancing the visibility and influence of this key component of Moroccan identity.

The exhibition also stood out for a highly engaging interactive segment, during which the calligrapher Archkik Lmlih conducted a live calligraphy workshop, writing visitors’ names in exquisite Arabic script and offering the public a unique opportunity to experience the art of calligraphy up close.
The exhibition was organized with the primary aim of highlighting the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy as an authentic art form and a cornerstone of Moroccan cultural identity, while also showcasing Moroccan ornamentation arts and contemporary calligraphy, thereby emphasizing the richness of the national artistic heritage.

This first art exhibition at the Mohammed VI Grand Media Library in Laâyoune marked an important milestone in strengthening the city’s cultural scene and celebrating authentic arts. It also offered the public and art enthusiasts the opportunity to deepen their appreciation of Moroccan calligraphy and ornamentation aesthetics.
